Snow White by GustafsonSNOW WHITE THE SEVEN DWARVES by Scott Gustafson LIMITED EDITION PRINT. Image size: 29 1/2″w x 17 1/4″h. Limited Edition of: 3500- Framed as shown from a private collection.
Rather than reference the many popular culture versions of this story, artist Scott Gustafson went back to the original story – a folk tale from the collection of the brothers Grimm – to create this spectacular painting of Snow White in the home of the seven dwarfs.
“When I reread the original fairy tale, it was like meeting old friends,” Gustafson says. “I felt a temptation to put the dwarves in elaborate, individual costumes, but I resisted it, because in the story they don’t have distinguishing names and characteristics. Since their daily work was mining, their house has elements of metal including the heavy plates and utensils – plus, the alchemic symbols for copper and tin worked across the upper beam in the background. You can practically hear the delightful sounds of music and nature as Snow White and the seven dwarves celebrate the simple pleasures of preparing supper together.”
About Scott Gustafson
Whether he was to be a cartoonist, animator or an illustrator, Scott Gustafson knew from childhood that he wanted to draw pictures for a living. Once he discovered the artists of the Golden Age of Illustration, his early interest in animated cartoons gave way to trying to learn how to paint. Those renown illustrators opened up a world of dynamic and imaginative images that inspired the young art student and set him on an illustrator’s course.
Gustafson’s paintings have appeared on greeting cards, calendars, collector’s plates, limited edition prints, character designs for the animated TV series Chuggington, as well as on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. But it is the world of illustration and the fun and challenge of telling stories with pictures that continually inspires him. Some of the books he has illustrated are Peter Pan, Classic Fairy Tales and Favorite Nursery Rhymes from Mother Goose, and Classic Bedtime Stories. He has also written and illustrated a novel for young readers entitled Eddie: The Lost Youth of Edgar Allan Poe.
Mr. Gustafson and his wife live in Chicago, and they have a dog, a cat, and a son, but not necessarily in that order.
