About the Artist
Traveling in Europe and the U.S. with, of course, my Canon 5D Mark lll in hand is the refreshing opportunity of my life. Walking through uncommon areas I find old architecture, alleys, walls, gardens, and rural communities. I randomly search for color, textures, beauty and sights that intrigue me — and which tourists may often miss.
As a native Oregonian growing up in the 1950’s, I shot landscape images with a box camera. A Kodak developer kit – truly a gift from my parents — introduced me to processing and printing film. Yes, I did receive classic darkroom training — in Oregon City’s Junior High School! It was the time and place where I was teased for shooting compositions, “Like a professional photographer”.
I set aside my camera – except for family photos – to move through the next 50 years as a teacher, a counselor, and businessman. Several years ago – as digital cameras were being introduced – I rediscovered an old cigar box full of my grainy, high school-era black and white, 2 x 2 inch images. I realized I wanted to capture images, again! I purchased my first high end digital camera — an Olympus 2500 with, what was then, an amazing 2.5 megapixels! This camera reawakened what seems to be a natural skill. And the next chapter of my life opened.
Today, my darkroom is my computer where I process images. When processing digitally, I retain the integrity of the captured composition without altering what my eyes have seen. I pull out the digital information of contrasting vivid colors and real-life textures which results in a dimensional feel in the images. In my Salem, Oregon, studio, I print on acid-free textured paper and frame with acid free mat. I back the images with acid free paper. Besides paper prints, another recent option I offer for customers is luminous prints with ink fused onto coated metal. The metal prints are like large open windows to another world. (See Metal Prints.)
Currently, I sell my art images in 12 festivals each year, in various galleries, and from my studio by appointment. In the spring of 2015, I traveled to southern France, Belgium, Slovenia and Croatia.
With my camera I capture the color, the texture, and the depth of the world — as I see it. Customers frequently asked, “Are these Paintings or Photos?” I like the question because it tells me the image has probably captured the imagination!
