Judith Baer – Artists In Action Gallery

Artist Biography:

Judith Baer was born in Akron, Ohio in 1950. Her first remembrance of being interested in art was when her mother showed her pictures of “Blue Boy” and “Pinkie” in a set of books. When Judith was four years old the family moved to Chula Vista in Southern California.

Drawing has always been something Judith has enjoyed. In her twenties, pen and ink drawings were very popular and at that time raising two children she couldn’t afford anything but a bottle of India ink and a crow quill pen. Drawing everything from animals, her children, and the California Missions, she established a good background for her art career.

Judith has been painting in watercolor most of her life. In creating her paintings, she captures the intimate moments of light and shadows as well as detailed passages of color playing off each other. Working in both wet into wet and dry brush Judith’s goal is to show the versatility of the media.

In 1993 Judith was juried into two co-ops, many art organizations and showed in the outdoor art show circuit across the southwest. In 1996 she was honored with the city of Torrance “Excellence in Art” annual award. After exhibiting at the “Laguna Art-A-Fair” for twenty-five years, Judith was honored with the “Lifetime Honorary Membership”. Her paintings are in collections in the United States, England, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, Belgium, and Russia.

Artist Statement:

What draws me to a piece of art is usually the details. For me, a realistic watercolor painting, or an expertly couture hand crafted garment, I see the beauty in the details. What gives me pleasure is to challenge myself in perfecting my skills, whether it is painting or sewing.

There are many ways to paint in watercolor. I have studied with artists who are loose and spontaneous, but I found my soul and happiness when I took classes in dry brush painting for botanical art. Working on hot pressed watercolor paper, with fine miniature brushes and transparent paints, my goal is to create hyper-realistic paintings.

I exhibited in Southern CA from 1993 through 2017 at Laguna Beach Art-A-Fair, the Palos Verdes Artists Studio, and many street festivals. I have shown at many galleries and juried exhibits. In 1996 I was honored with the city of Torrance, CA “Excellence in Art” annual award. My paintings are in collections in the United States, England, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, Belgium, and Russia.

I moved to Oregon in 2019 to be close to my family. Currently I paint for the enjoyment of painting. I’ve joined the Oregon Botanical Artists, Watercolor Society of Oregon, and Northwest Watercolor Society and have enjoyed participating in art exhibits across Oregon.
