About Our 2024 Adjudicator: Cynthia Herron
BIOGRAPHY
Cynthia, born in Ohio, lived in the southwest for twenty-five years and moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2004. She received her BFA in painting from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, her Teaching Certification in 1994 from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, and her MFA in painting from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2003.
For twenty-eight years she taught painting and drawing at the college level and currently teaches art classes at The Art Department Store in Salem as well as at her studio. During 2007 she was the arts columnist for Salem Monthly and in 2009, 2010 and 2011 she helped coordinate the Visual Artist Studio Tour for the greater Salem area. She is available for private art lessons. Her paintings and collages have won awards in regional juried shows and can be seen at Raven Rocks Gallery and Gifts in Depoe Bay, Oregon, and Fog Forest Gallery in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada
My work is based on the writings of the Irish poet and mystic John O’Donohue. “For the Celtic people, nature was not matter, rather it was a luminous and numinous presence which had depth, possibility and beauty.” John O’Donohue, Anam Cara. I am concerned with the layers of appearance, and what lies beneath and beyond. I arrange my subject in harmony with Cubist lines and shapes, allowing the space to shift and suggest “the beyond,” while representing the colors and shapes in nature.
In nature I walk, observe and sketch compositions in ink, noting hues with watercolor crayons. In the margins I write such things as weather, time of day, and color nuances. These later inform larger, abstract acrylic and oil paintings in the studio. Each unique painting is the product of being in a particular location, and the memories of that time. Colors and textures weave a many-layered tapestry designed to elucidate the sublime both in landscape and in ourselves.
